Unseasonably cold weather will continue through Friday. Skies will be mostly cloudy this evening with scattered snow flurries likely. Temperatures will fall to the upper teens by late evening. Overnight, skies will become partly cloudy, and it will be very cold with low temperatures falling to the upper single digits by morning; the record low temperature for Madison is 5 degrees set in 1914. Wind chills will be from +5 to -5 degrees early on Thursday morning.
Thursday will be partly sunny, breezy, and very cold with high temperatures in the upper teens, just above the record coldest high temperature of 15 set in 1872. On Thursday night, skies will become mostly clear, and temperatures will fall to just above zero, although with little wind, wind chills won't be a factor. Friday will be partly sunny and not quite as cold as high temperatures reach the middle 20s.
As an area of low pressure moves near Wisconsin on Friday night, skies wi! ll become mostly cloudy, and it will be breezy and milder. Light snow, sleet, and freezing rain will develop later Friday night and should change to drizzle or light rain on Saturday as temperatures warm into the lower 40s by Saturday afternoon. Mild air will linger across southern Wisconsin Sunday with occasional rain. Highs will reach the middle 40s.
Mostly cloudy, windy, and colder weather will move into Wisconsin on the back side of the departing low pressure system on Monday, with rain mixing with and then changing to snow. Temperatures will top out in the upper 30s early on Monday, then falling through the 30s during the day. Some snow accumulation is possible from late Monday into Monday night.
Tuesday will be mostly cloudy, windy, and colder with snow showers and flurries. High temperatures will only reach the upper 20s. Wednesday will be partly sunny and continued cold with high temperatures in the lower 30s.
On Thanksgiving Day, a storm sy! stem should move into the central Midwest. We will be close to the rai n and snow line as precipitation develops on Thursday, and with high temperatures expected in the middle 30s, both snow and rain are equally likely at this point. There are signs that we could turn snowy and colder for Black Friday, but this is far enough out in the forecast that the confidence for that to happen is still relatively low; monitor later forecast for updates for those planning on travelling near the Thanksgiving holiday.
