A powerful area of low pressure will move out of the central Plains today and head toward Wisconsin. The center of the low pressure system will track across southern Wisconsin, putting the northern part of the state in an area favorable for heavy snow. Southern Wisconsin may see a light mix of precipitation early today with temperatures starting in the middle 30s. The mix of precipitation will change over to scattered light rain showers this morning for much of southern Wisconsin. Areas northwest of Wisconsin Dells will have the best chance for seeing snow and sleet mix with the rain through the day. Highs will reach the lower 50s in Madison, but temperatures will be much cooler well northwest of Madison. Rain will continue tonight, and may be mixed with snow and sleet for areas well northwest of Madison. As colder air invades the region Tuesday, rain and snow showers will change to light snow or flurries. By the time the cold air arrives in southern Wisconsin, much of the moisture will have moved to the east, so any snow accumulations will be quite minor in the southern part of the state. Highs will reach the upper 30s early Tuesday, before temperatures fall into the lower 30s by late in the day.
An extended period of unseasonably cold weather will settle in from Wednesday into next weekend. Skies will be partly sunny on Wednesday and Thursday, and mostly sunny on Friday. High temperatures will only reach the upper 20s Wednesday and Thursday, and 30 degrees on Friday. Low temperatures will be in the teens.
Next weekend should be quiet with partly sunny skies and highs in the upper 20s to lower 30s. Winds will become a bit breezy on Sunday.
