NOTES:
A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is in effect until 1 PM for south-central Wisconsin, including the counties of SAUK, IOWA, DANE, LAFAYETTE, and GREEN (this includes the Madison metropolitan area).
A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is in effect until 3 PM for north-central and northeastern Illinois, and southeastern Wisconsin. In Illinois, this includes the counties of WINNEBAGO, BOONE, and McHENRY (this includes the Rockford and Chicago metropolitan areas). In Wisconsin, this includes the counties of DODGE, JEFFERSON, ROCK, and WALWORTH (this includes the Milwaukee metropolitan area).
The Storm Prediction Center says that there is an ENHANCED RISK for severe thunderstorms for this afternoon and tonight for extreme southeastern Minnesota, the eastern third of Iowa, the northern third of Illinois and the southern half of Wisconsin (south of a Rochester, MN to Wausau to Door County line). There is a SLIGHT RISK for severe thunderstorms over the rest of the southeastern third of Minnesota, the rest of the three-quarters of Iowa, the rest of the northern two-thirds of Illinois, and the rest of Wisconsin. There is a MARGINAL RISK for severe thunderstorms over the rest of the southeastern three-quarters of Minnesota, the rest of Iowa, and the rest of the northern three-quarters of Illinois.
A significant severe weather outbreak is possible this afternoon and evening over much of the central Midwest. A warm front lifting northward through the Midwest will bring a line of severe thunderstorms along and north of it from eastern Wisconsin into eastern Illinois. High winds (possibly gusting to 80 MPH) and hail are possible with these thunderstorms. After this morning's thunderstorms, some sunshine should warm temperatures into the 80s with dew points in the lower 70s later this afternoon. This will create an extremely unstable atmosphere ahead of a cold front which will move from Minnesota into Wisconsin and Iowa by late afternoon, and into Illinois tonight. Strong wind shear could lead to the development of supercell thunderstorms later this afternoon, developing into a squall line tonight. Tornadoes (a few of which may be strong and long-tracked) damaging winds (with widespread wind damage and wind gusts to 80 MPH possible), and hail (with some hail to baseball sized or larger possible) could develop with the afternoon thunderstorms. The severe weather threat will end with the passage of the cold front tonight.
There is some uncertainty yet as to when and where the afternoon severe thunderstorms will develop based on the effect of this morning's thunderstorms as lingering clouds and rain-cooled air may disrupt the afternoon atmospheric instability.
