NOTES:
A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is in effect until 10 AM for northern Illinois, and southeastern and far south-central Wisconsin. In Illinois, this includes the counties of JO DAVIESS, STEPHENSON, WINNEBAGO, BOONE, and McHENRY (this includes the Rockford and Chicago metropolitan areas). In Wisconsin, this includes the counties of JEFFERSON, LAFAYETTE, GREEN, ROCK, and WALWORTH (this includes the Milwaukee metropolitan area).

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is in effect until 1 AM early Tuesday morning for north-central and northeastern Illinois, including the counties of WINNEBAGO, BOONE, and McHENRY (this includes the Rockford and Chicago metropolitan areas).

The Storm Prediction Center says that there is a MODERATE RISK for widespread severe thunderstorms, along with some intense severe thunderstorms for Monday and Monday night over much of Illinois. There is an ENHANCED RISK for a few severe thunderstorms along with isolated intense severe thunderstorms for the southeastern quarter of Iowa, the rest of Illinois, and for southwestern and south-central Wisconsin (south and west of a line from Prairie du Chien to Madison to Kenosha). There is a SLIGHT RISK for a few severe thunderstorms over the rest of the southeastern third of Iowa, and the rest of the southern third of Wisconsin (south of a La Crosse to Wausau to Green Bay line). There is a MARGINAL RISK for isolated severe thunderstorms for central, east-central, and southeastern Minnesota, the rest of the southeastern two-thirds of Iowa, and the rest of Wisconsin.

Strong to occasionally severe thunderstorms in eastern Iowa and southern Wisconsin early this morning will gradually weaken as they push into northern Illinois, with high winds, hail, and heavy rainfall as the main threats. As these storms weaken, they may leave an outflow boundary over northern Illinois into eastern Iowa.

By afternoon, a weak cold front will move southeastward through Wisconsin. As clouds thin and very warm to hot and very humid conditions develop, an extremely unstable atmosphere will be in place across the central Midwest. Additional severe thunderstorms may develop along the cold front and the outflow boundary during the afternoon, heading southeastward into southeastern Iowa and much of Illinois by evening.

Tornadoes, high winds, hail, and heavy rainfall are all threats with the afternoon and evening thunderstorms. In addition, an isolated strong tornado is possible, with the highest threat area being along the outflow boundary, most likely in northern Illinois. Also, an intense cluster or line of severe thunderstorms may form, resulting in widespread damaging winds as the storms move southeastward through much of Illinois. The severe weather threat area might have to be adjusted for area and magnitude, depending on the effect that this morning's thunderstorms have on stabilizing and cooling the air where they pass, eventually resulting in the position of the outflow boundaries where additional severe thunderstorms are expected to develop later this afternoon.
