NOTES:
A HEAT ADVISORY is in effect until 8 PM for extreme eastern Iowa, and northwestern, north-central and northeastern Illinois. In Iowa, this includes the county of DUBUQUE. In Illinois, this includes the counties of JO DAVIESS, STEPHENSON, WINNEBAGO, BOONE, and McHENRY (this includes the Rockford and Chicago metropolitan areas).
The Storm Prediction Center says that there is a SLIGHT RISK for a few severe thunderstorms for today and tonight over extreme southeastern Minnesota, the southeastern two-thirds of Iowa, the northern third of northern Illinois, and the southeastern two-thirds of Wisconsin (south and east of a line from Rochester, MN to Medford to Iron River, MI). There is a MARGINAL RISK for isolated severe thunderstorms for the rest of the southeastern third of Minnesota, the rest of Iowa, the rest of the northern two-thirds of Illinois, and the rest of Wisconsin.
Early morning thunderstorms across Wisconsin may produce isolated severe thunderstorms with high winds, hail, and heavy rain before weakening. An outflow boundary between the rain cooled air and areas that received little or no rain early in the morning will develop over southern or central Wisconsin. As skies clear later in the morning and remain partly sunny in the afternoon, very warm to hot and very humid air will be in place across much of the upper Midwest during the day on Saturday.
A low pressure system will move north of Lakes Superior on Saturday, allowing a cold front to move from Minnesota and northern Iowa into Wisconsin late in the day, moving through most of the state tonight. Thunderstorms will develop along and ahead of the cold front, and a few thunderstorms may become severe. In addition, if the outflow boundary is still present, a few severe thunderstorms may develop along it as well. High winds, hail, and heavy rain are the main threats, although isolated tornadoes may be possible where thunderstorms initially develop on Saturday afternoon or early Saturday evening, especially if the outflow boundary intersects the cold front. Eventually, a line of thunderstorms may develop along the cold front, pushing into northern Illinois overnight, where high winds will become the primary threat. The threat for severe weather should end with the passage of the cold front later Saturday night.
