NOTES:
The Storm Prediction Center says that there is a SLIGHT RISK for severe thunderstorms for tonight across southeastern Minnesota, most of Iowa, and southwestern Wisconsin (south and west of a Rochester, MN to Tomah to Portage to Darlington line). There is a MARGINAL RISK for severe thunderstorms for most of the rest of the east half of Minnesota, the rest of Iowa, the rest of the northern half of Illinois, and the rest of Wisconsin.
Mild to warm and humid air is over the upper Midwest. An advancing cold front moving through Minnesota will move into Iowa and Wisconsin, reaching southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois later tonight. More thunderstorms will develop along and ahead of the cold front. Rather strong wind fields at all levels mean that a few severe thunderstorms are possible, with hail and high winds being the main threats. The severe weather threat will diminish with the loss of heating later tonight, and should end with the passage of the cold front overnight.
There is a SLIGHT RISK for severe thunderstorms on Friday and Friday night over southeastern Iowa and west-central Illinois. There is a MARGINAL RISK for severe thunderstorms over the rest of the southeastern half of Iowa, the northern half of Illinois, and the southeastern quarter of Wisconsin (southeast of a Prairie du Chien to Baraboo to Manitowoc line).
A wave of low pressure will move northeastward on a stationary front over southern Iowa and northern Illinois on Friday afternoon and Friday night. This may lead to severe thunderstorms developing in southern Iowa on Friday afternoon, moving northeastward into Illinois Friday evening. High winds, hail, and heavy rainfall are possible with the strongest thunderstorms; isolated tornadoes may be possible in the milder air south of the low pressure system from southern Iowa into west-central Illinois. Any threat for severe weather should end Friday night as cooler air surges southward as the low pressure system moves eastward into Michigan by early Saturday morning.
