This afternoon will be mostly cloudy, windy, and much colder with light snow and flurries ending. Skies may begin to clear west of Madison late in the day. Temperatures will continue to fall into the single digits above zero, although a few locations well west of Madison may drop to zero or below. Wind chills will fall to -5 to -20. Tonight skies will become mostly clear, it will be breezy, and bitterly to dangerously cold. Low temperatures will fall to around -10 with wind chills from -20 to -30 or even colder in a few locations.
More cloudiness will arrive again on Monday as a quick hitting snow system approaches the area. It will remain bitterly cold with high temperatures in the middle single digits. That system will move through Monday night into early Tuesday and drop 2-6" of snow, with the heaviest amounts toward the Illinois state line southwest of Madison. Low temperatures will stay near zero, while high temperatures on Tuesday will only! reach the upper single digits. Strong winds will return after the snow ends, leading to blowing and drifting of the light, fluffy snow.
The coldest air of the season may arrive Tuesday night. Low temperatures will nosedive to around -15 by Wednesday morning, with dangerously cold wind chills as low as -40 a distinct possibility. Wednesday will be mostly sunny, but still windy and bitterly cold with high temperatures struggling to reach zero and wind chills as cold as -25 even during the afternoon.
Thursday will be partly sunny, breezy and cold with highs near 10. Friday will be partly sunny and not quite as cold with highs in the middle teens. Another chance of snow showers will develop Saturday with highs topping out near 20, and by Sunday partly sunny skies return with highs closer to average in the mid 20s.
