This evening will be mostly cloudy with temperatures falling near 30. Winds will become breezy tonight as a major winter storm system begins to lift from the southwest toward Wisconsin and lows will drop into the mid 20s.
This storm system will affect southern Wisconsin from Monday morning through early Tuesday morning. On Monday, a mixture of snow and sleet will move in from the south in the morning, then change over to a mix of sleet and freezing rain in the afternoon across much of southern Wisconsin. Areas to the NW of Madison will continue to see snow instead of freezing rain. Areas SE of Madison could see up to 0.25" of ice accumulation through the afternoon and evening. It will be very windy during the day on Monday as well, with will cause additional travel problems and a significant chance of power outages, especially in the areas receiving freezing rain. On Monday night, snow, sleet and freezing rain showers will continue, with snow gradually becoming the dominant precipitation type. Total snow amounts will range from near an inch SE of Madison to 6" NW of Madison.
On Tuesday, precipitation will diminish to flurries and freezing drizzle. It will be mostly cloudy and seasonably cool with high temperatures in the lower to middle 30s. Wednesday will be mostly cloudy and seasonably cold with scattered light snow and flurries and highs in the upper 20s.
New Year's Eve will be variably cloudy, breezy and seasonably cold with high temperatures in the middle 20s; temperatures will be in the mid teens around midnight to ring in the new year. The first day of 2016 will be cold as well. It will be partly sunny and breezy with high temperatures in the lower to middle 20s.
Quiet and seasonably cold weather is expected for the first weekend of the New Year. Saturday will be partly sunny, breezy, and a little milder with high temperatures near 30. Sunday will be variably cloudy, breezy and seasonably cold with highs in the upper 20s.
Monday will be mostly sunny and seasonably cool with highs near 30 again.
