A major winter storm will affect southern Wisconsin this morning through Tuesday. This morning, a mixture of snow and sleet will move in from the south, then change over to a mix of sleet and freezing rain in the afternoon across much of southern Wisconsin. Areas to the NW of Madison will continue to see snow instead of freezing rain. Southern Wisconsin will see up to 0.25" of ice accumulation through the afternoon and evening, with the highest totals southeast of Madison. Daytime snow and sleet totals will range from 1-4", highest northwest of Madison. It will be very windy through the day, which will cause additional travel problems and a chance for power outages, especially in the areas receiving freezing rain. Tonight, snow, sleet, and freezing rain showers will continue, with snow gradually becoming the dominant precipitation type. Total sleet and snow amounts will range from around 1-4" SE of Madison to 4-8" NW of Madison.
Light snow will still be possible on Tuesday morning, and freezing drizzle will be possible through the day. It will be mostly cloudy and seasonably cold with high temperatures in the lower 30s. Wednesday will be mostly cloudy and seasonably cold with snow showers and flurries and highs in the upper 20s.
New Year's Eve will be variably cloudy, breezy, and seasonably cold with high temperatures in the middle 20s; temperatures will be in the middle teens around midnight to ring in the new year. The first day of 2016 will be cold as well. It will be partly sunny and breezy with high temperatures in the lower to middle 20s.
Quiet and seasonably cold weather is expected for the first weekend of the New Year. Saturday will be partly sunny, breezy, and not quite as cold with high temperatures in the upper 20s. Sunday will be partly sunny and seasonably cold with highs near 30 degrees.
